The separation of Panama from Colombia formalized on November 3, 1903.
The city was alive today! Awaken by music of the kuna Indians, calypso and independence day celebrations! I was out of bed by 6:30, I couldn't sleep.
The city celebrates with a big parade in Panama City, there are traditional folklore dancing in the streets, people dress in traditional costumes, wearing a pollera and a montuno, and dance El Tamborito or El Atravesao, traditional dances. The tradition is mainly kept by schools who prepare themselves to parade on the streets all year long. Parents spend a lot of money on instruments and uniforms for those in a marching band.
This was a never ending parade which began at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 3p.m. Rain or shine, the parade goes on! There is so much pride here in Panama, they are really proud of their homeland.
